The basic rule
For stays up to three months, EU citizens can normally stay in Portugal with a valid identity card or passport. For residence beyond three months, registration becomes relevant.
Who is usually covered
The CRUE route applies to EU citizens and also to nationals of Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Andorra and Switzerland.
Typical profiles
Employees, self-employed professionals, students, retirees and self-sufficient residents may all need CRUE if they live in Portugal for more than three months.
Family members
EU family members may use the EU citizen registration route. Non-EU family members usually need a different AIMA residence card route.
If you are not sure
