Non-EU spouse of an EU citizen in Portugal

When the EU citizen has a non-EU spouse, the case usually has two layers: CRUE for the EU citizen and a separate residence card route for the non-EU family member.

Do not confuse CRUE with the spouse route

CRUE is for the EU citizen or eligible European family member. A spouse who is not an EU citizen usually needs the residence card route for family members of EU citizens, handled through AIMA.

Why the EU citizen CRUE still matters

AIMA lists the registration certificate or residence document of the EU citizen among the documents connected to the family member residence card route. This makes the EU citizen file important for the spouse case.

Typical spouse documents

The family route may involve identity documents, marriage or civil status documents, proof of the EU citizen status, responsibility documents and evidence requested by AIMA. Foreign civil documents may need apostille, certification or translation depending on the case.

How we route these cases

The 500 EUR CRUE Assistance package can support the EU citizen CRUE step. The non-EU spouse residence card is a separate legal or administrative matter and should be requested through consultation.
