NIF and CRUE in Portugal

NIF and CRUE are separate things, but in practice they often appear together in a relocation file.

Short answer

NIF is the Portuguese tax identification number. CRUE is the EU citizen residence registration certificate. They are not the same document, but many municipalities and related services may ask for NIF as part of the practical file.

What NIF is used for

NIF is used for tax, contracts, banking, employment, utilities and many administrative interactions in Portugal. Gov.pt states that foreigners who work and pay taxes in Portugal need a NIF.

What CRUE is used for

CRUE formalizes the right of residence for EU, EEA, Swiss and Andorran citizens staying in Portugal for more than three months. It is requested through the Câmara Municipal of the area of residence.

Common order of steps

  • Obtain or confirm NIF.
  • Secure real address proof.
  • Start work, self-employment, study or prepare resources evidence.
  • Request CRUE at the municipality after the relevant timing.
  • Use CRUE and address status for further steps when needed.

Can NIF be requested before CRUE?

Often yes. NIF can be requested by foreigners independently of CRUE, but the specific route and representative requirement depend on residence status and personal situation.
